Bring the Heat – 2013

The Braves and Gas South present UWGA with $31,000

Velvet Washington with Gas South and Carley Jacobs with the United Way of Greater Atlanta

Few people are called to take to the turf at Turner Field, and those lucky enough are typically Major League Baseball players and officials. There was, however, one notable exception to the rule prior the last regular-season finale between the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies, Velvet Washington, a Gas South employee.

Velvet was the toast of ‘The Ted’ for a few memorable moments as she presented the United Way of Greater Atlanta (UWGA) with a hefty $31,000 check from Gas South as part of our Bring the Heat campaign with the Braves.

What’s Bring the Heat? Every time a Braves pitcher records a regular season strikeout, Gas South donates $25 to the UWGA. For the record, the Braves’ regular season strikeout total for 2013 was 1232 (note to all you mathematicians, we rounded our donation up by $200 to make an even $31,000).

Since 2008, Bring the Heat has contributed more than $200,000 to local nonprofits as part of Gas South’s Hometown Value promise to advance the communities in which we live, work and serve. While the campaign is officially over for 2013, Gas South is already looking forward to continuing Bring the Heat next year. Go Braves!

Gas South ‘Brings the Heat’ in 2013

Much has changed for the Atlanta Braves this season. Hometown hero Chipper Jones has retired and the lineup is crowded with exciting new faces, such as the Upton brothers.

But some things haven’t changed. For the sixth straight year, Gas South will donate $25 to a local charity each time a Braves pitcher records a strikeout, as part of our Bring the Heat® campaign. When a strikeout takes place at Turner Field, you’ll see fireworks erupting from Gas South’s iconic sign in right field.  This celebratory display will signify that Gas South has donated another $25 to charity. This year’s proceeds will benefit the United Way of Greater Atlanta.

Since 2008, Gas South has contributed more than $172,000 to Georgia nonprofits through Bring the Heat®.  Just last year alone, the Atlanta Braves recorded 1,232 strikeouts, helping us raise $61,600 for Georgia charities. It’s yet another reason to cheer when everyone’s favorite closer, Craig Kimbrell strikes out the competition.

By partnering with the Braves for Bring the Heat®, we are able to fulfill our commitment to give back to the communities we serve.

So as you enjoy your hot dog (or gourmet steak sandwich!) at Turner field this season, be sure to take note of the Gas South sign and lend your loudest voice and best tomahawk chop to our Braves pitchers. Because the more strikeouts they pitch, the more money we donate to the United Way.

Go Braves!

Gas South ‘Brings the Heat’!

Gas South’s 4th annual Bring the Heat™ campaign came to a close on September 30th with the Atlanta Braves last regular season home game. Each year, Gas South pledges to donate $25 each to both the United Way of Greater Atlanta and Salvation Army’s Project SHARE every time a Braves pitcher throws a strikeout. The Braves’ pitchers ended the year with 1,232 strikeouts, which allowed Gas South to contribute a grand total of $61,600 to the campaign!

Two of our vice presidents, Meredith Hodges and Chris Coan, presented the checks at Turner Field in front of a sold-out crowd to our partners. Milton Little Jr. of United Way and Josh and Jordan Hinson of the Salvation Army accepted the checks on behalf of their organizations. We are proud of our Bring the Heat™ campaign, which has allowed us to donate $172,000 since 2010. This program enables Gas South to continue to help make a huge impact on the lives of thousands of local families in need. Go Braves!

What was your favorite moment from the 2012 Braves season?
