Gas South at the JA Discovery Center

 

Junior Achievement’s Discovery Center is now open at Atlanta’s World Congress Center! We are thrilled to be one of the 36 companies with storefronts inside the learning simulation. The state of the art center is one of only ten in the nation and is expected to serve more than 30,000 middle school children each year. The new, interactive space is designed to teach kids about financial literacy with students from the Atlanta, DeKalb County, Fulton County and Marietta City school districts taking part in the program.

Students visiting the Gas South storefront will learn about natural gas, the cost of heating a household and energy saving tips. We are excited to be a part of this important program and our employees look forward to volunteering in the Center!

Disney LIVE! Comes to Savannah

Recently, we had the pleasure of partnering with Savannah’s Head Start program and Feld Entertainment to sponsor more than 400 children and their families for a special performance of Disney LIVE! The kids got free popcorn and pictures with cut-outs of their favorite characters. The event drew a crowd of about 1,600 and we were happy to help create a fun night out for our guests. We hope everyone enjoyed the show!

Gas South and the Braves are ‘Bringing the Heat!’

Atlanta Braves fans have a lot to be excited about this year. Led by one of the game’s best pitching rotations, the Braves lead the NL East division at the season’s halfway point and are primed for a playoff run.

We’re cheering and tomahawk chopping to show our support. But the team’s dominant pitching means more than just another shot at a title. Each time a Braves pitcher records a strikeout, Gas South donates $25 to the United Way of Greater Atlanta.

It’s all part of our Bring the Heat™ campaign, now in its sixth season. To date, the Braves have thrown 826 strikeouts, translating into $20,650 donated to the United Way.

Since 2008, Gas South’s Bring the Heat™ program has contributed more than $200,000 to the United Way and other local nonprofit organizations. It’s just another way that we give back to the communities we serve.

So the next time you visit Turner Field to cheer on our Braves this summer, be sure to keep count of how many times a Braves opponent is sent back to the dugout on strikes – and remember that with each ‘K’ recorded, Gas South is helping build a better community.

Atlanta, a foodie’s paradise

The Atlanta Visitors & Convention Bureau (ACVB) is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. The city will be hosting many events and recognizing great leaders who have helped Atlanta and the ACVB reach this milestone. Atlanta’s reputation as a “foodie’s paradise” is growing rapidly and the ACVB and Gas South are teaming together to sponsor Atlanta’s 100 Signature Dishes. Throughout 2013, chefs from all over Atlanta will feature their signatures dishes and, if you pace yourself, you can eat all 100 entrees by the end of the year. Not to be outdone by the great food, restaurants and bars will also be featuring 100 signature cocktails. Visit your favorite mixologist and try their wonderful creations. If you are wondering where to find all these great places to eat, check out Atlanta Eats.  Gas South is proud to sponsor the new TV show as their host, Steak Shapiro, searches Atlanta for great meals. Gas South has worked with John and his team for many years and greatly appreciates his business and his friendship.

Gas South ‘Brings the Heat’ in 2013

Much has changed for the Atlanta Braves this season. Hometown hero Chipper Jones has retired and the lineup is crowded with exciting new faces, such as the Upton brothers.

But some things haven’t changed. For the sixth straight year, Gas South will donate $25 to a local charity each time a Braves pitcher records a strikeout, as part of our Bring the Heat® campaign. When a strikeout takes place at Turner Field, you’ll see fireworks erupting from Gas South’s iconic sign in right field.  This celebratory display will signify that Gas South has donated another $25 to charity. This year’s proceeds will benefit the United Way of Greater Atlanta.

Since 2008, Gas South has contributed more than $172,000 to Georgia nonprofits through Bring the Heat®.  Just last year alone, the Atlanta Braves recorded 1,232 strikeouts, helping us raise $61,600 for Georgia charities. It’s yet another reason to cheer when everyone’s favorite closer, Craig Kimbrell strikes out the competition.

By partnering with the Braves for Bring the Heat®, we are able to fulfill our commitment to give back to the communities we serve.

So as you enjoy your hot dog (or gourmet steak sandwich!) at Turner field this season, be sure to take note of the Gas South sign and lend your loudest voice and best tomahawk chop to our Braves pitchers. Because the more strikeouts they pitch, the more money we donate to the United Way.

Customer Spotlight – Marlow’s Tavern

This week on The Hot Spot, we are featuring one of our valued customers. So we sat down with John Metz, the Executive Chef and Co-Founder of Marlow’s Tavern to talk about his fantastic restaurants.

Thanks for joining us, John. So tell us, how and when was Marlow’s Tavern first started?

We wanted to create a great neighborhood place where we could go to enjoy friends, family, excellent food, great adult beverages and a warm environment. We wanted to re-invent the tavern segment: take the best of the older classic taverns and modernize it.  We opened our first Marlow’s Tavern in November 2004.

How is the menu chosen?

We have assembled a small and well-balanced menu, which is changed every season on both the food and the adult beverage side.  We take great R&D trips around Atlanta, around the country and around the world.  We want to bring unique ingredients and flavors to the neighborhoods we serve.  We combine those ingredients with core elements and ingredients on the menu to make it approachable for our guests.

That sounds delicious! So, what is your favorite thing about Marlow’s?

I really like the fact that the menu is small enough to execute at a very consistent and high level, but that we have a broad appeal with many unique ingredients that you would not traditionally see in a tavern or casual restaurant.

How do you choose your live entertainment?

We have music in every tavern – some taverns one day a week and some taverns five or seven days a week. It just depends on the neighborhood.  Our General Managers coordinate all of our music selections with support from our market/operating partners.

What is the best way to stay up-to-date on what’s happening at Marlow’s?

We try very hard to keep our website and Facebook pages up to date, but it is hard in this fast moving world we live in. We supplement with a great quarterly newsletter and email notices with events, features and fun at the taverns every couple of weeks. To really stay on top of everything at Marlow’s and get some good deals too, sign up to be an Insider on our website.

Why does Marlow’s use Gas South?

We have been partners with Gas South for many years in all of our businesses, not just Marlow’s.  I think our cultures, level of service and hospitality align, and we like to support our friends and partners who like to support us.  It is very much a two-way collaboration and we need Gas South as much as Gas South needs Marlow’s.

Does Marlow’s have any specials coming up that you would like our readers to know about?

Yes, we are bringing NOLA to ATL with our annual “Bayou ‘n Bourbon” menu full of cuisine from the Deep South. Starting today through Monday, March 25, all Atlanta-area tavern locations are featuring the menu full of jazzed up dishes and classic cocktails that will take diners taste buds on a trip to the Big Easy. Project SHARE – Teaming Up with the Salvation Army

 

Have you heard the news? Gas South is partnering with the Salvation Army to bring Project SHARE to our customers. Last week, we collected donations of new and used blankets to bring to the Salvation Army’s shelter in Atlanta. Our President and CEO, Kevin Greiner, joined several of our employees at the shelter, as we worked with the residents to make the beds. It was a great way to kick off the program and give back to those who need it most.

Project SHARE is an initiative through the Salvation Army that collects money to assist those who are less fortunate with acquiring food, shelter, clothing, medical supplies and paying utility bills. Donations through the program help citizens in all 159 counties of Georgia and the money collected stays in the county from which it originates. You can sign up with Project SHARE by pledging to contribute any whole dollar amount you choose each month. The amount will be automatically added to your Gas South bill. Gas South will also be matching your donation up to $5 per month in 2013.

Georgia Gives Day

Georgia Gives Day, a project started by the Georgia Center for Nonprofits, is scheduled for December 6th. This is the first year of the program that pulls together Georgia’s nonprofits in an effort to raise as much money for them as possible. The Georgia Center for Nonprofits will not receive any of the contributions. Instead, you donate to the organization of your choice through the website. Hundreds of nonprofits throughout the state have registered to participate through the website and all you need to do is search by area or category to find the organization you like. After placing your donation electronically, you’ll receive an email with the tax deductible information.

- Nonprofits ranging from the United Way, the Salvation Army, Action Ministries, The Red Cross, Boys & Girls Clubs, to the Woodruff Arts Center are registered with their own landing pages on the site. Search to find the organization that means the most to you.

- Many of the organizations registered have a special side bar that tells you where your money will be going. For example, St Vincent de Paul provides the following information: a donation of $26 will feed a family of 4 for a day. A donation of $50 will feed a family of 4 for 4 days. Finally, a donation of $100 will provide direct assistance to clients through services and programs. This is a helpful way to determine exactly what your donation will be used for.

As part of our Gas South Cares initiative, we are a contributing sponsor for the program and are proud to be a part of such a great project. So, if you are planning to give this Holiday Season, consider giving through Georgia Gives Day to the organization of your choice on or before December 6th. Let’s help Georgia raise millions for our nonprofits that keep our state growing!

Thanksgiving at Gas South!

Gas South employees celebrated an early Thanksgiving as a family with a festive potluck lunch. The celebration was filled with lots of food, lots of fun and lots of thanks!

We also took some time to reflect on what we are thankful for as a company and we want you to know, we are thankful for you. To all of our loyal customers, thank you for your business. From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Helping the victims of Hurricane Sandy

As we’ve all heard, Hurricane Sandy had a devastating impact on the Northeast last week. The wake of destruction has left people without power, heat, water, food and gas. Many are homeless and many more are still without transportation. This disastrous storm hit home with our employees, as many of us have friends and family who were impacted by Sandy, from Haiti all the way up the US coast to New England. We are worried about our loved ones and we wanted to find a way to help!

We were able to find a church in one of the hardest hit boroughs of New York City, Staten Island. St. Christopher’s Church on Midland Ave. was happy to have our support and gave us a list of needed supplies. Gas South got the word out to our employees and the other companies who share our office building to bring in donations of food, clothing and other necessary items to send to NY. On November 7, we packed 12 large boxes of supplies for those in need and sent them up the coast to help the relief effort. We are proud that we were able to come together in this time of need even from thousands of miles away.
