Glossary of Terms



A

Affiliated Marketer
A provider that is owned either by a distributor, or by a corporation that also owns a distributor.

Affinity Program
This program is designed to support fundraising efforts in the communities Gas South serve. For every month that you remain a Gas South customer, we will make a donation to the program of your choice.

AGL Account Number
The account number assigned by Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) to service your account.

AGL Base Charge
These Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) monthly charges are to maintain and supply natural gas service to your home or business. All AGL charges are regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) and are the same regardless of the gas provider that you choose.

AGL Charges
These Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) charges are to maintain and supply natural gas service to your home or business. All AGL charges are regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) and are the same regardless of the gas provider that you choose.

AGL Connect Fee
This Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) charge is for connecting natural gas service at a location where there is existing service, regardless of whether the gas is currently turned on or off. All AGL charges are regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) and are the same regardless of the natural gas provider that you choose.

AGL Meter Read Charge
This Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) charge on your bill is for reading your natural gas meter. All AGL charges are regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) and are the same regardless of the natural gas provider that you choose.

AGL Meter Set Fee
This Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) charge is for connecting natural gas service at a location where a new meter must be installed. All AGL charges are regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) and are the same regardless of the natural gas provider that you choose.

AGL Number
The account number assigned by Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) to service your account.

AGL Pass Through Charges
These Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) charges on your bill are to maintain and supply natural gas service to your home or business. All AGL charges are regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) and are the same regardless of the natural gas provider that you choose.

AGL Reconnect Fee
This Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) charge is for requesting to be reconnected after being disconnected for nonpayment. All AGL charges are regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) and are the same regardless of the gas provider that you choose.

AGL Seasonal Fee
This Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) charge on your bill is for voluntarily disconnecting and reconnecting service at the same service location within a twelve month period. This charge includes the AGL Connect Fee.

AGL Senior Citizen Discount
This discount is for the total amount of the AGL Base Charge, or $14, whichever is less and is available to customers who are 65 years or older with a fixed income of less than $14,355 a year. You must complete the AGL Senior Citizen Discount Application to apply for this discount.

AGL Switch Fee
This Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) charge on your bill is for switching providers more than once within a 12 month period of time.

Annual Consumption
The amount of natural gas used by a residential or business customer in a year.

Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC)
This natural gas distributor maintains and physically supplies natural gas to Georgia homes and businesses through their pipelines. AGL connects, reconnects, and disconnects gas service as well as reads your meter.

Auto-Pay
A service that allows you to have your monthly bill paid automatically using your checking account, savings account, debit card or credit card.

Balance Forward
The total debit or credit balance from previous bills.

Beginning Read
The actual meter reading in CCFs recorded on the Beginning Read date.

Bill Date
The date your bill was created.

Bill Notification
A feature of Online Account Services which notifies you via email when your bill is available online.

Billing Period
The period of time for consumption, charges, payments and adjustments that are included on your bill.

British Thermal Unit (BTU)
This standard unit of measurement is used to measure heat energy and to convert CCFs to Therms. It is the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a pint of water (which weighs exactly 16 ounces) by one degree Fahrenheit.

Budget Account Balance
The difference between your Budget Bill Payment Plan payments and your actual charges. If your actual charges are less than your total payments, you will have a credit (negative) balance. If your actual charges are more than your total payments, you will have an outstanding (positive) balance.

Budget Bill Anniversary Date
The date Gas South reviews your Budget Bill Payment Plan to determine if your budget payment needs to be increased or decreased due to rate plan changes, actual consumption and/or changes to the market price of gas.

Budget Bill Payment Plan
This is a convenient service that provides fixed monthly payments for natural gas service based on your estimated annual rate per therm and estimated annual consumption.

Budget Payment
The Budget Bill Payment Plan calculated monthly payment based on your estimated annual rate per therm and estimated annual consumption.

Budget Payment Due
The total amount due for this monthly payment.

Budget Payment Due Date
The date the current amount due on your bill must be paid in order to avoid late fees and disconnection for nonpayment.

Business Rate Plans
These rate plans are available to business customers.

Carbon Monoxide (CO)
A colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced by the incomplete burning of solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels. Appliances fueled with natural gas may produce CO. High levels can be fatal if inhaled.

CCFs Used
The amount of gas used presented in a unit of measurement applicable to natural gas (i.e. Hundreds of Cubic Feet). CCFs Used is calculated by subtracting the Beginning Read from the Ending Read.

Change Your Rate Plan
This is the process of selecting a new rate plan to replace your current rate plan.

CheckFree® Account
This third-party provider of financial e-commerce solutions supports the Gas South Payment (ePay) feature.

City Partner
Our city partnership program offers customers of municipal cities a special discount off all Gas South standard residential rate plans.

Cobb Electric Membership Corporation (Cobb EMC)
A not-for-profit electric membership cooperative serving approximately 190,000 residential and commercial customers with reliable electric energy.

Collections
A third-party agency that is used to collect unpaid debt from a delinquent Gas South account.

Connect Fee
This fee on your bill is for connecting natural gas service at a location where there is existing gas service regardless of whether the gas is currently turned on or off. This fee includes the AGL Connect Fee.

Conservation
The protection, preservation, management, or restoration of natural resources in order to prevent depletion.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS)
This agency provides free, confidential budget counseling, community-wide education programs in money management, debt management programs for consumers who are overextended, and comprehensive housing counseling.

Consumption
The amount of natural gas used by a residential or business customer over a period of time.

Consumption History
A graph that shows your therms used for the current month as well as the previous twelve (12) months.

Credit Score
A score returned from a third-party credit bureau which allows Gas South to determine a customer's eligibility to sign up for natural gas service.

Cubic Foot (CF)
The most common measurement of gas volume. One Cubic Foot is equal to the amount of gas required to fill one cubic foot under standard temperature and pressure. 1 Cubic Foot is approximately 1,025 British Thermal Units (BTUs). 100 Cubic Feet = 1 CCF.

Current Charges Due Date
The date the current amount due on your bill must be paid in order to avoid late fees and disconnection for nonpayment.

Customer Service Fee
This fee on your bill is for servicing your account and is based on your credit score and rate plan selected.

Days of Service
The number of days of gas consumption between your Meter Start and Meter End meter read dates.

Dedicated Design Day Capacity (DDDC)
This Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) factor is an estimate of how much natural gas pipeline capacity must be reserved for a residence or business and is based on a customer's demand on the system on the coldest day of the prior year. AGL is responsible for determining and recalculating the DDDC on an annual basis and updates your DDDC each September. The DDDC is used to calculate AGL Pass Through Charges and business Interstate Pipeline Charges.

Demand
The measure of a customer or system's natural gas requirements over a period of time.

Deregulation
The removal or relaxation of regulations or controls governing a business or service operation such as natural gas utilities.

Disconnection for Nonpayment
This can occur if your overdue balance is not paid within forty-five (45) days after the bill date.

Distributor
A company that is responsible for transporting natural gas to your home or business, maintaining the pipes that carry the gas, and for the connection, disconnection and emergency response in the case of a suspected gas leak.

Due Date
The date the current amount due on your bill must be paid in order to avoid late fees and disconnection for nonpayment.

Early Contract Cancellation Fee
This fee applies if you choose to terminate your fixed rate contract before it expires.

Electric Membership Corporation (EMC)
Consumer-owned and operated cooperatives that supply electric service to residential and business/industrial consumers.

Electronic Bill Payment & Presentment (EBPP)
A feature of Online Account Services which allows you to receive email bill notifications and to use Gas South Payment (ePay) which allows you to make a one-time online payment using your checking or savings account.

EMC Partners
This partnership offers Georgia EMC members a special discount off all Gas South standard residential rate plans.

Ending Read
The actual meter reading in CCFs recorded on the Ending Read date.

End-User
The residential or business customer receiving natural gas service.

Enrollment ID
An identification number which allows a new customer to check the status of their pending enrollment for Gas South natural gas service.

ePay
A service that allows you to pay your bill at gas-south.com using your checking account.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
This federal agency is responsible for the regulation of the production, transmission and sale of natural gas and electric power, as well as the transportation of oil.

Fixed Rate Plan
This rate plan provides a consistent rate per therm for the term of the rate plan.

Gas Charges
These charges on your bill are for the actual amount of gas used during your billing period. These charges are calculated by multiplying your Therms Used times your Rate per Therm.

Gas South
A Georgia based natural gas company serving over 250,000 residential, business, and governmental customers. Gas South is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cobb Electric Membership Corporation (Cobb EMC).

Gas South Account Number
The account number assigned by Gas South to service your account.

Gas South Senior Citizen Discount
The senior rate plans are available to residential customers who are 65 or older and offer a discount off the Rate per Therm for all residential rate plans.

Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR)
A comprehensive health and social services agency whose mission is to strengthen Georgia families by providing services through programs that ensure their health and welfare.

Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC)
This state regulatory agency provides oversight, policy guidance and direction to electric, telecommunications and natural gas public utilities.

Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs
An agency whose mission is to protect consumers and businesses from unlawful, deceptive and unfair practices in the marketplace by enforcement of the laws they administer and through education.

Group Billing
A feature offered to Gas South business and industrial customers with ten (10) or more accounts which allows multiple accounts to be consolidated on to a single Gas South bill each month.

Health Alert
An indicator which prevents a customer from being disconnected for non-payment until the health alert expires. A medical certificate must be completed by the attending physician and returned to Gas South.

Heating Energy Assistance Team (H.E.A.T.)
A nonprofit organization which provides energy assistance to low-income Georgia households.

Interstate Pipeline Charges
These charges on your bill are for business customers and cover interstate pipeline gas transportation costs. These charges are calculated by multiplying your demand charge times your Dedicated Design Day Capacity (DDDC).

Introductory Variable Rate
This rate for your first month of service is offered to new residential customers signing up for our Variable Rate Plan. After your first month, you will continue on the Variable Rate Plan which fluctuates month to month with the natural gas market.

Late Fee
This fee on your bill indicates payment for the total amount due was not received by the bill due date.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
This agency offers financial assistance during the winter months to natural gas customers from low income households.

Marketer
A company, such as Gas South, that is approved and certified by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to buy natural gas and sell it to residential and business customers.

Mercaptan
A chemical added to natural gas to give the gas a distinctive odor (similar to rotten eggs) that warns customers of a leak.

Meter End
See Meter Read End Date.

Meter Read Cycle
This cycle is assigned by Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) based on the geographical location of your home or business and identifies when your monthly meter reading will occur.

Meter Read End Date
The meter read date when the Ending Read for your gas consumption was recorded for this billing period.

Meter Read Start Date
The meter read date when the Beginning Read for your gas consumption was recorded for this billing period.

Past Due Balance
The total charges from previous bills that were not paid by the previous bill due dates.

Payment
The amount paid since your previous bill.

Payment Arrangement
This service breaks a past due balance into multiple payments in order to prevent disconnection for nonpayment. Payment Arrangements have the same due date as the bill.

Pay-As-You-Go Amount
Your Pay-As-You-Go Program forecasted charges for the next thirty (30) days.

Pay-As-You-Go Program
Gas South’s Pay-As-You-Go program is designed to bring choice and savings to customers
(re)establishing their credit. This program allows you to obtain natural gas service by paying the expected charges for gas you will use over the next 30 days, at the beginning of the service period. No deposits are required under this program.

Pay-As-You-Go Variance
This amount is your actual charges minus your Pay-As-You-Go Amount (forecasted charges) for that period.

Pay Plan
This service breaks a past due balance into multiple payments in order to prevent disconnection for nonpayment. Pay Plans usually have different due dates than the bill due date and occur over a shorter period of time than a payment arrangement.

Payment Options
A comprehensive list of all of the ways you can pay your Gas South bill.

Premise
The address where you receive your natural gas service.

Previous Balance
The balance forward from your previous bill.

Price Watch
A feature offered to Gas South business and industrial customers in which Gas South notifies the customer when their requested fixed rate becomes available.

Producer
These companies are generally involved in the exploration, drilling, and refinement of natural gas.

Provider
A company such as Gas South that is approved and certified by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to buy natural gas and sell it to residential and business customers.

Rate per Therm
The rate plan price for each therm of natural gas consumption.

Rate Plan
This defines the type of plan and pricing details for your natural gas service. Details include whether the plan is fixed or variable, the Rate per Therm and the Customer Service Fee. Fixed rate plan details include the term of the rate plan and business rate plans include the Interstate Pipeline Charges.

Reconnect Fee
This charge on your bill is for requesting to be reconnected after being disconnected for nonpayment. This fee includes the AGL Reconnect Fee.

Reconnect Your Service
This is a customer request to be reconnected after being disconnected for nonpayment. All past due balances must be paid.

Regulated Provider
A company that provides natural gas service to low-income households and consumers who have been unable to obtain or maintain natural gas service from another natural gas provider.

Regulated Provider Program
This program was established as a provision of the Natural Gas Consumers' Relief Act to provide natural gas service to low income residential consumers and consumers who are unable to obtain or maintain service from a gas marketer.

Renew Your Rate Plan
This is the process of selecting a new rate plan when your current fixed rate plan expires.

Residential Rate Plans
These rate plans are available to residential customers.

Return Check Fee
This fee on your bill indicates your check was returned due to insufficient funds.

A religious charitable organization that provides faith-based programs and disaster relief services.

Seasonal Reconnect
This is a customer request to voluntarily disconnect and then reconnect service at the same service location within a twelve month period.

Senior Rate Plans
These rate plans are available to residential customers who are 65 or older and offer a discount off the Rate per Therm for all residential rate plans.

Service Address
The address where you receive your natural gas service.

Sign Up For Service
This is a customer request to start new natural gas service or switch existing natural gas service to Gas South.

Slamming
The practice of changing a customer's natural gas provider without proper authorization.

Speedpay®
An online payment option which allows you to make a one-time payment using a credit or debit card.

Switch Providers
This is a customer request to switch their existing natural gas service from their current provider to Gas South.

Tax Exempt
Some businesses or organizations, such as libraries and schools, are not required to pay state and/or local taxes. All government accounts are automatically set up as tax exempt. Churches and other organizations must send in paperwork verifying tax exempt status prior to being set up as tax exempt.

Term
This is the number of months of your fixed rate plan.

Therm
The unit for measuring natural gas consumption used to calculate Gas Charges based on your Rate per Therm.

Thermal Factor
The factor used to convert the amount of gas consumed from CCFs to Therms. Meter reads are in the CCFs unit of measure and must be converted to therms so that Gas Charges can be calculated based on your Rate per Therm.

Therms Used
The total consumption used to calculate Gas Charges based on your Rate per Therm. Therms Used is calculated by multiplying your CCFs Used times the Thermal Factor.

Total Amount Due
The total amount due including current and past due charges.

Total Current Charges
The total charges accrued for a particular billing period. For the Budget Bill Payment Program, this is your Budget Payment. For the Pay-As-You-Go Program, this is your Pay-As-You-Go Amount plus your Pay-As-You-Go Variance.

Transfer Your Service
This is a customer request to turn off service at your current home or business and to sign up for service at your new home or business.

Turn Off Your Service
This is a customer request to stop their existing gas service.

Turn On New Service
This is a customer request to start service at a new home or business which may or may not need to have a new meter installed.
