What is the role of Atlanta Gas Light in my natural gas service?

Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) is the distribution company that owns the pipeline system through which natural gas is delivered to your property. AGL connects, reconnects, and disconnects gas service and reads meters. In Georgia's deregulated natural gas industry, AGL is the distributor, Gas South is a provider (marketer), and you are the end-user.

Will I receive a bill from Atlanta Gas Light for their services?

No. Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) will forward all of your charges and fees to Gas South and they will appear as a portion of your Gas South bill. These charges include the monthly AGL Pass Through Charges and Meter Read Charge, as well as connect, reconnect and switch fees.

What are the AGL Pass Through Charges?

The AGL Pass Through Charges consist of AGL’s cost for maintaining the natural gas pipelines and storage facilities, reading your meter each month and other social and environmental costs. AGL sends us your monthly charges for these services, which are “passed through” to you – without any additional cost or mark-up. These charges are the same regardless of which natural gas marketer you choose. To learn more about your AGL Pass Through Charges, please refer to the Guide to Atlanta Gas Light Charges on the AGL website.

When will I get charged the AGL Pass Through Charges?

AGL Pass Through Charges are assessed on the 20th of every month for the next month of service. AGL assesses full monthly pass through charges regardless of the actual number of days you receive service.

Are the AGL Pass Through Charges the same for all customers?

No. The AGL Pass Through Charges differ for residential and business customers and are based on the AGL Dedicated Design Day Capacity (DDDC). Your DDDC Factor is used to calculate your AGL Pass Through Charges. The DDDC Factor determines how much pipeline capacity is needed to deliver natural gas to your location on the coldest day of the year. AGL calculates your DDDC annually, usually in August, by reviewing the past gas consumption and usage patterns at your premise. See How to Read Your Monthly Bill (PDF 114KB) for an example of the DDDC.

If I move will I keep the same AGL Pass Through Charges?

No. Because the Dedicated Design Day Capacity (DDDC) is calculated for a premise and not a customer, if you move to a new location you may have a different DDDC at your new location. Because the DDDC is used to calculate the AGL Base Charge, you may have a different AGL Pass Through Charges at your new location.

Where will I find the AGL Pass Through Charge on my bill?

The AGL Base Charge will be listed as AGL Pass Through Charges on your Gas South bill. See How to Read Your Monthly Bill (PDF 114KB) for an example of these charges.

Can I turn off my service in the warm summer months to avoid paying the AGL Pass Through Charges?

Yes. However, a customer who voluntarily disconnects service and reconnects service at the same premise within a twelve month period will be charged an Atlanta Gas Light (AGLC) Seasonal Fee. The AGL Seasonal Fee is currently $25 for a residential customer and $35 for a business customer. This fee does not include additional connect fees of up to $60 for a residential customer and up to $100 for a business customer.

What are AGL switch fees?

Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) customers may switch providers once every 12 months at no charge. AGL charges Switch Fees to customers who change providers more than once within a 12 month period of time. This fee is currently $7.50.

Does Atlanta Gas Light offer a senior discount?

Yes. Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) offers an AGL senior citizen discount on their monthly AGL Base Charge. To qualify, you must be 65 years or older and on a fixed income of less than $14,355 a year. This discount is for the total amount of the AGL Base Charge, or $14, whichever is less. Please complete the AGL Senior Citizen Discount Application (PDF 34KB) or contact us and we will be glad to help you apply for the AGL Senior Citizen Discount. Gas South also offers Senior Rate Plans for customers who are 65 or older.
